Danger-Deet!

Don’t assume the fragrant smell wafting from that other bottle of insect repellent means it’s safe and non-toxic. Most other brands contain the insecticide DEET. When combined with other chemicals or medications, DEET can have toxic effects on the brain and body. With heavy exposure to DEET, humans may experience memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath. Children are even more susceptible to subtle brain changes caused by chemicals in their environment because their skin more readily absorbs them. These findings regarding adults are consistent with reported human symptoms following DEET’S use by the military in the Persian Gulf War. These symptoms may not be evident until months or even years after exposure.
