Natural Bed Bug Prevention

Bed Bugs are preventable.  If you want to avoid getting these insects into your home, being proactive is the best bet. Before we go into how to prevent bed bugs from infesting your bedroom lets discuss first how bed bugs get into your house.

Bed Bugs cannot fly. Bed Bugs can only crawl. That means for bed bugs to get into your bed they need to crawl or climb in. This is why bed bugs can be such a problem. They easily crawl from apartment to apartment in the same building. They can move a long way in search of their next host.

This means in order to get bed bugs into your home it must happen by them already living there when you got there, they crawled in a window, door or walls from another unit or they caught a ride on a visitor from the outside and deposited them in your home.

Sealing up your home from the outside is pretty tough. Getting bed bugs from your neighbor is just tough luck. There is not much you can do at that point. Being prepared when you are outside or traveling can dramatically cut down on the possibility that you may introduce bed bugs into your home.

The biggest point to make is just be aware of your surroundings. Look for signs of bed bugs and if discovered stay clear. The signs of bed bugs are reddish-brown stains and a sweet odor.

When traveling, do your homework. Look at reviews of the hotel and see if people have found bed bugs. When you get your room, do an inspection. Look for the tell-tale signs and be thorough. Keep your luggage away from the bed and off the ground if possible. This can prevent them from crawling in and when you return do the laundry right away and inspect and vacuum your luggage. There are also products out there designed to aid in bed bug prevention when on the road. One product, by Nature-Cide is an all-natural bed bug travel spray that fends off the buggers. Spray the furniture, bed, luggage, carpet, and bedding. The spray is chemical free, effective and very inexpensive. Products like this ease the mind when you are far from home.

Other things to think about when trying to prevent bed bugs is don’t bring used furniture or other belongings into your home until you have given them a deep inspection. Think about it. Maybe there is a reason why that box spring and mattress are out by the road. If you are the person putting an infested couch out by the road, be kind and put a sign on it so some unaware person doesn’t make a huge mistake.

Getting bed bugs in your home is a huge pain. Taking the time to prevent this from happening to you can save you a lot of headaches later.
