Bedbugs or climex lectularius are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of warm blooded animals. Bedbugs feed primarily at night and conceal themselves well in little cracks, or tight spots. They tend to be found in mattresses, bedding materials and around the bed.
Color: Bedbugs are a reddish-brown color.
Size and Shape: Fully mature bedbugs average ¼ inch in length. They are flat and oval in shape.
Behavior: Bedbugs cannot fly and must hitch a ride on a host to move from place to place. Spreading bedbugs happens with luggage, shoes or any means of transportation for their next meal. They primarily feed at night. They can hide anywhere but generally stay close to where their host will be. They hide in mattresses, pillows, head boards, floor boards, electrical outlets etc. They feed and typically scurry off and hide for days.
Habitat: Bedbugs are found all over the United States. They are nocturnal creatures and live close to their hosts, hiding in small cracks and tight places.
Damage: A bad infestation can destroy the infested belongings. They are no known to carry any diseases but can inflict serious sores from the bites and can swell up and itch badly.
